As of January 1, 2013, Abbott Laboratories Inc. will split into two separate, publicly traded health care companies by spinning off AbbVie Inc. Abbott will focus on diversified medical products--nutritionals (28%), devices (27%), generics (25%), and diagnostics (20%)--and AbbVie will become a research-based pharmaceutical firm that sells pharmaceuticals and biologics in the US and worldwide.
