Executive Summary

President Bush signed the Dietary Supplement & Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act (S 3546) into law on Dec. 26. The bill will take effect in December 2007, and FDA has until late August 2007 to provide industry with a guidance on the reporting requirements. Educating industry personnel and potential reporters of adverse events, particularly healthcare professionals, will be crucial to the success of the bill, according to industry stakeholders. "The task is now up to us to assure that the bill is understood [and that] steps are taken to implement its provisions and make sure the intent and purposes of the bill are embraced by industry," United Natural Products Association Executive Director Loren Israelsen wrote Dec. 27 (1"The Tan Sheet" Dec. 18, 2006, p. 6)...
