Cyanotech and Earthrise Nutritionals receive FDA notification that spirulina microalgae is generally recognized as safe and effective for use in "a variety of foods," firms announce in a joint release Nov. 10. The ingredient is a dried form of blue-green microalgae that contains vitamin B, fatty acids and beta carotene. Cyanotech currently markets Spirulina Pacifica dietary supplement products in powder, tablet and flake form.
