Executive Summary
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) announces plans to seek more research funding for NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements. Speaking at the CHPA's dietary supplement symposium in Arlington, Va. Sept. 14, Harkin says ODS in September will award a grant establishing its first university-based botanical research center. Funding will come from a $2 mil. FY 1999 appropriation for the initiative, and ODS plans to create a total of eight research centers during the next few years (1"The Tan Sheet" May 10, p. 12). ODS Acting Director Rebecca Costello, PhD, reports there has been "discussion" about moving ODS into the NIH National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine
