Sundlof bids CFSAN farewell: Stephen Sundlof steps down as director of FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition for a two-year assignment with the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Commissioner Margaret Hamburg and Deputy Commissioner for Foods Mike Taylor said in a May 3 staff memo that Sundlof, a veterinarian and toxicologist, is leaving FDA after 18 years but will remain available as a senior advisor. Sundlof was Center for Veterinary Medicine director for 14 years before moving to CFSAN in 2008. He headed the food center during its response to widespread salmonella contamination of peanut products in 2009 and as the dietary supplement industry, backed by Capitol Hill, pushed for new dietary ingredient notification guidance, which the agency has yet to publish. Michael Landa, CFSAN's deputy director for regulatory affairs, will serve as acting director.
