DOD restricts OTC aspirin in combat areas

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

The Department of Defense says military members and other personnel in combat areas should not use aspirin products unless directed by a physician because use of the common OTC drug can cause excessive blood loss if a person is injured or undergoes surgery. The department April 9 directed the Army and Air Force Exchange Service retail outlets and other Morale, Welfare and Recreation Activities facilities to discontinue sales of OTC aspirin products in war zone areas, DOD says, noting pulled products include Bayer, Excedrin and Alka-Seltzer aspirins. Outlets began removing the products April 14. Retailers should sell OTC products with ibuprofen, acetaminophen and naproxen, DOD says in an April 30 release
