The National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine launched an online continuing education series on complementary and alternative medicine July 18. The video lecture series features an "Herbs and Other Dietary Supplements" chapter and offers health care professionals continuing medical education credits after satisfactory completion of a post-lecture test. NCCAM selected an April 2003 lecture by Paul Coates, former director of the Office of Dietary Supplements, for the chapter on supplements. Coates' lecture defines dietary supplements, gives an overview of current research on efficacy and safety, provides links to reliable and up-to-date resources and outlines the "roles and research activities" of ODS.
