Executive Summary

"Potentially severe drug-dietary supplement interactions were infrequent and comparable in incidence to potentially serious drug-drug interactions" in a population of 458 veteran outpatients from VA centers in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, according to a study published in the March 22 Archives of Internal Medicine. Of 89 potential drug-supplement interactions identified, 6% were classified as severe, say Catherine Peng, Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System, et al. Most of the potential interactions identified were with ginseng, garlic, ginkgo, and coenzyme Q-10. Authors note 43% of the patients were taking at least one supplement with Rx medications...
