Executive Summary
Novogen's red clover isoflavone-containing supplement "is a natural alternative for minimizing vaginal dryness in healthy, postmenopausal women," Malcolm Whitehead, King's College Hospital, London, et al., told attendees at the British Menopause Society meeting July 6. Prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study involved 29 postmenopausal women ages 45-65 who took either Promensil or placebo daily for eight weeks, then underwent a wash-out period and switched to eight weeks of the opposite therapy. Whitehead et al. used vaginal smears to measure vaginal maturation index. Treatment arm showed "significant improvement in VMI compared to placebo" and researchers did not find endometrial thickening, which can occur with hormone replacement therapy...
