"Long-term treatment with glucosamine sulfate retarded the progression of knee osteoarthritis, possibly determining disease modification," according to study published in recent Archives of Internal Medicine. More than 200 patients with knee OA received either 1,500 mg glucosamine sulfate or placebo in randomized, double-blind trial conducted by Karel Pavelka, MD/PhD, Charles University, Prague, et al. After three years, glucosamine arm showed "no average change" in joint space narrowing, while placebo group experienced significantly greater narrowing of -.19 mm.
