Executive Summary

FDA extending deadline for issuing stanol/sterol ester health claims final rule to July 25 due to "complexity" of issues raised in comments on interim final rule, lack of resources to complete reg by June 5, agency says in June 6 Federal Register. Interim final rule released Sept. 8 allows products such as McNeil's Benecol and Lipton's Take Control spreads to carry health claims regarding cholesterol reduction/CHD benefits (1"The Tan Sheet" Sept. 11, 2000, p. 3). Changes urged by comments include broadening food categories eligible for claim, adjusting intake levels and permitting foods containing nonesterified form of stanols/sterols to bear health claim
