Spending bills

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

Agriculture conference report adopted by Senate in an 86-8 vote Oct. 18; the House approved the report 340-75 on Oct. 11. HR 4461 provides FDA with $1.22 bil. for fiscal 2001, including $317.5 mil. for CDER and $285.3 mil. for CFSAN. The bill is awaiting President Clinton's signature. Fourth continuing resolution (HJ Res 114) will keep government running until Oct. 25 while Congress wraps up incomplete spending bills, including the Labor-HHS measure. The President is expected to sign the resolution, but along with House Democrats, has vowed to push GOP appropriators to finish spending bills sooner by only offering one-day extensions after the latest CR expires. The Senate cleared the measure by voice vote, but the House was closer at 262-136
