Shalala on herbals advertising

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

HHS Secretary Donna Shalala voices concern with herbal supplement ads on National Public Radio's Dianne Rehm Show Feb. 3. Initially responding to a question about direct-to-consumer advertising for Rx pharmaceuticals, Shalala said: "I'm much more worried about people who don't go through the FDA - about the herbal products - that are beginning to advertise on radio as well as on television and in other kinds of ads, claiming health outcomes without the scientific basis." Continuing, she said: "I think people have to be very careful to make sure that what they put in their bodies is approved by the FDA [and] has gone through careful and high scientific standards." Shalala also referred to FDA's recent regulatory actions against GBL manufacturers
