Executive Summary

Oral care volume falls 6% in fiscal first quarter ended Sept. 30, the firm reports. P&G attributes the drop to an unfavorable comparison to first quarter last year when Crest MultiCare shipped to the trade. Competition in the oral care environment "remained heavy" during the quarter as Colgate-Palmolive "continued to spend heavily behind Total," P&G notes. However, Crest market share was up 1.5 points over the year-earlier period, driven by MultiCare and Crest Extra Whitening, which began shipping in December 1997. Together, the products hold about a 9% share of the category, P&G says
