Executive Summary
JEFFORDS TOBACCO SETTLEMENT LEGISLATION MARKUP SLATED FOR MARCH 11 in the Senate Labor & Human Resources Committee. Committee Chairman James Jeffords' (R-Vt.) Preventing Addiction to Smoking Among Teens Act (S 1648) would provide $1 bil. annually from fiscal 1999 through 2002, and $1.5 bil. per year for FY 2003 through 2008 for smoking cessation programs. Unlike some other tobacco settlement measures proposed, the Jeffords bill would require funding from the tobacco settlement to be used solely for tobacco-related initiatives.
