NBTY SALES JUMP 44.8% TO $281.4 MIL. IN FISCAL 1997 (ended Sept. 30), including $23.7 mil. in revenues from the recently acquired English vitamin retailer Holland & Barrett, Bohemia, N.Y.-based NBTY said Nov. 12. NBTY completed its purchase of the largest U.K. vitamin and health food retail chain on Aug. 7 for $169 mil. ("The Tan Sheet" Sept. 1, In Brief). NBTY announced it was in negotiations with H&B, then a division of Lloyds Chemists plc, in August ("The Tan Sheet" Aug. 4, In Brief). FY 1997 net income for NBTY grew 29% to $17.2 mil. NBTY also acquired the mail-order business of Star Pharmaceutical in the fourth quarter. Based in Long Island, N.Y., Star has approximately 100,000 customers.
