Executive Summary

USP ginger monograph: To be published in the next issue of the National Formulary, making final the raw material standard for the dietary supplement ingredient. In March 1998, raw material standards for garlic, gingko and valerian will be published in final form; final standards for feverfew, hypericum, saw palmetto and ginseng will follow in September 1998. "Preview" monographs for ginger, garlic and ginkgo were published for comment in the March/April Pharmacopoeial Forum; others appeared in the publication's January/February and May/June issues ("The Tan Sheet" Feb. 3, p. 18). The monographs specify elements such as the part of the plant used, standard levels of reference substances, botanical characteristics, methods of storage and lab tests for identification...
