"Pharmacist" reference on OTC labels would confuse patients, AMA maintains.

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

"PHARMACIST" REFERENCE ON OTC LABEL WARNINGS DISCOURAGED BY AMA because "such a change inappropriately places the pharmacist in a position for which he/she is not qualified, is likely to be confusing to the patient and may adversely impact the health of some patients," the American Medical Association argues in comments submitted to FDA July 17. The comments were made in response to FDA's Feb. 27 proposed rule on OTC drug label reform that would change, in the "Warnings" section of labeling, the phrase "Ask your doctor" to "Ask your doctor or pharmacist" ("The Tan Sheet" March 3, p. 5).
