Executive Summary
DIETARY SUPPLEMENT HEALTH CLAIMS APPROVAL PROCESS, SCIENTIFIC STANDARDS should continue to be the same as those in place for conventional foods, the President's Commission on Dietary Supplement Labels recommends in a draft report issued for public comment on June 24. One of the commission's charges was to look into whether changes should be made in the requirements for health claims allowed by the Nutrition Labeling & Education Act of 1990. The draft report does not propose any comprehensive changes in the approval or substantiation process for health claims. "The commission agrees with the key aspects of the rules that relate to the formal standard for decision making and believes these allow for flexibility in evaluating individual petitions for health claims," the report states.
