Executive Summary

Risk Assessment/Risk Management Commission: Final report from 10-member Presidential/Congressional commission released March 7. Unchanged from a June draft, the report says that FDA's ability to require scientific evidence from dietary supplement manufacturers in support of health claims has suffered under the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act and "should be reaffirmed and strengthened" ("The Tan Sheet" June 17, 1996, p. 18). Council for Responsible Nutrition Director of Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Annette Dickenson, PhD, had testified to the commission in July that DSHEA is not a threat to FDA's authority over dietary supplements ("The Tan Sheet" July 29, 1996, p. 4)...
