GENERAL NUTRITION "ON TARGET" TO OPEN 500 U.S. STORES BY THE END OF 1996, the company said Oct. 30. GNC opened 148 stores in the third quarter (ended Oct. 12), of which half are company-owned and half are franchised. GNC operates a total of 2,887 stores worldwide; 1,767 are company-owned and 1,120 are franchised. The stores operate under the General Nutrition Center, Natures Food Centre, Health & Diet Centre, Nature's Fresh and Amphora names in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and 16 countries. GNC is a specialty retailer of vitamins, supplements, sports nutrition, personal care and other health-related products.
