Martek Biosciences: Signs letter of intent to acquire a Winchester, Ky. fermentation facility for $10 mil. in cash, stock, and promissory notes from Golden Technologies Company. Martek plans to produce DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid) microbial triglyceride oils, the components of its Formulaid infant formula ingredient, at the plant. In December 1994, Martek received a patent for the DHA/ARA blend as well as blends used for supplementing infant formula such as ARA microbial oils with certain fish oils, and DHA microbial oils with vegetable oil sources of gamma linoleic acid.
