Executive Summary
Antitrust case brought by the Federal Trade Commission is set to go to trial on Sept. 7. Abbott attended a pretrial hearing on July 29. In 1992, FTC filed two complaints alleging that Abbott's "anti-competitive behavior" in the infant formula market was exclusionary, and that its "lockstep" pricing strategies effectively defrauded the Puerto Rican Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Abbott has paid more than $ 100 mil. in settlements, most recently to 21 wholesalers and retailers involved in a suit in Florida ("The Tan Sheet" May 31, p. 9).
