In a profile of transplant pioneer Francis Moore in The New Yorker May 5, Brigham and Women's Hospital's Atul Gawande, MD, writes about his decision not to recommend Lilly's sepsis agent Xigris (drotrecogin alfa) to the family of an elderly Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome patient. Noting the cost and unproven efficacy of the drug and other potential interventions, Gawande declared that "colleagues and superiors would think I was mad and cruel if I used any of them."
