LD[50] toxicity test

LD[50] toxicity test: Animal test "is not an FDA-required procedure for determining safety and its use is not part of agency testing policy," FDA says in "general policy statement" in Oct. 11 Federal Register. Although FDA has not required the test for a number of years, the agency issued the policy statement as part of a response to a citizens petition from animal rights groups requesting that FDA revise guidelines to state that the test is no longer acceptable.
