Saccharin bill passes Senate cmte.
Executive Summary
Labor & Human Resources Cmte. passed Chairman Hatch's (R-Utah) measure April 17 to extend moratorium on FDA's proposed saccharin ban. Amendment by Sen. Metzenbaum (D-Ohio) limits the moratorium extension to two years, instead of three. Another amendment offered by Metzenbaum to require labeling on aspartame-containing products to disclose the amount of aspartame contents was rejected by the cmte. Bill is expected to be considered on the Senate floor the week of April 22, the expiration date of the current moratorium.
