Venable nets FDA counsel Tyler

Ralph Tyler, formerly FDA’s chief counsel, becomes a partner at the law firm Venable LLC. He joins the litigation and government divisions and will focus on state and federal regulatory issues and civil litigation, the firm said Nov. 3. Tyler joined FDA in late 2009 and previously served as the insurance commissioner of Maryland. Tyler, who will work in Venable’s Washington and Baltimore offices, left FDA Aug. 5 for health reasons (Also see "Tyler's Departure As FDA Chief Counsel Leaves Another Chair To Fill" - Pink Sheet, 11 Jul, 2011.).

Perrigo gets new OTC regulatory leader

Kinn Chan de Velarde joins private labeler Perrigo as regulatory affairs manager for the scientific affairs team. The Allegan, Mich., firm Nov. 3 said she will be responsible for expediting products to market by managing OTC regulatory files with FDA. Chan de Velarde has 19 years’ experience, eight in academia and 11 in the pharmaceutical industry, Perrigo said.

USP strengthens science team

U.S. Pharmacopeia shakes up its executive team with one appointment from outside the organization and three members internal promotions. Praveen Tyle becomes chief scientific officer after 27 years in senior executive level positions at Novartis Consumer Health, Bausch + Lomb and Pharmacia Corp., USP said Oct. 31.

Scott Henderson becomes chief information officer; he joined USP in 2010 as VP of information technology. Angela Long is appointed chief of global alliances and organizational affairs after 19 years at USP, most recently serving as VP of health care quality standards and compendial affairs. Srini Srinivasan, who has been with USP in multiple roles since 1986, becomes chief international sites and standards officer.

Morrissey to lead nutraceuticals expansion

Neutra Corp. appoints Cindy Morrissey president and CEO as it is “expanding aggressively” into the nutraceutical industry. Morrissey previously managed medical and dental clinics and has served as an executive at health care-focused companies, Neutra said Nov. 2. Morrissey succeeds Sarah Keck, who becomes chief operating officer for the Sarasota, Fla.-based firm.

Burns joins GMA as nutrition policy exec

Robert Burns joins the Grocery Manufacturers Association as VP of health and nutrition policy, the trade group says Oct. 19. Burns was most recently the owner of consulting firm Nutrition Implications and previously worked at Cadbury Schweppes and Mead Johnson Nutrition. He will report to Leon Bruner, senior VP for scientific and regulatory affairs. Burns starts at GMA Nov. 14.

EFSA vet to lead science strategy

Hubert Deluyker is appointed to lead the European Food Safety Authority’s science and strategy and coordination directorate, EFSA says Oct. 25. The newly formed directorate coordinates the implementation of EFSA’s science strategy and engages international stakeholders and partners. Deluyker joined EFSA in 2004 and previously served as head of EFSA’s now-defunct scientific cooperation and assistance directorate. EFSA is reorganizing with efforts expected to be complete by 2012, the agency said.

Wilson heads Balance Bar

Peter Wilson becomes president and CEO of the Balance Bar Co., the Valhalla, N.Y.-based energy bar marketer announces Nov. 2. Wilson was chief operating officer of DeMets Candy Co., which, like Balance Bar, is owned by Greenwich, Conn., private equity firm Brynwood Partners.

Two Thomases take over at Laufer Bridge

Keith Thomas joins sports nutrition firm Laufer Bridge Enterprises as CEO and Michael Thomas joins as senior VP, the Atlanta firm says. Laufer Bridge markets products through subsidiary Creative Edge Nutrition. Both Thomases come to Laufer Bridge from Engineered Sports Technology, a nutritional products firm.

Tomasino, Giunta join Mercy team

Luc Tomasino and Ryan Giunta become CEO and head of sales of NEU Industries, which makes Mercy, a hangover prevention beverage containing amino acids and vitamins. Tomasino was senior VP and managing director of SDI Media, a Hollywood subtitling firm. Giunta brings nearly 10 years’ experience at Red Bull to the New York firm.
