GSK removes zinc from denture cream

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

GlaxoSmithKline says it will remove zinc from its denture creams, including Super PoliGrip Original, Ultra Fresh and Extra Care, as a "voluntary, precautionary action" in response to potential health risks related to "long-term, excessive" use of the mineral. The consumer warning and reformulation come after the company received around 400 reports of neurological symptoms associated with the products between 1996 and 2009. According to a Feb. 19 press release from the Great Neck, N.Y.-based firm Parker Waichman Alonso, lawyers representing clients in a class action lawsuit against Glaxo for allegedly failing to warn consumers of the risk applaud the change and urge the firm to recall the products "given their devastating impact on consumers," (1"The Tan Sheet" Oct. 9, 2009). The law firm also urged Procter & Gamble to remove zinc from its denture cream Fixodent. P&G did not return a call prior to deadline. Both firms assure consumers that the creams are safe when used as directed
