NIH supports echinacea research

The National Institutes of Health says May 6 it will give $4.4 mil. in continuation funding to an Iowa State University research center dedicated to understanding and improving echinacea and hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort). The Iowa Center for Research on Botanical Dietary Supplements will study the plants' bioavailability for three years, "focusing on cellular, signaling, pathways and receptors," it says. Additionally, researchers will study prunella, known to treat ailments such as inflammatory bowel disease, fever, headache and diarrhea.
