Executive Summary
The Lancet has "received confirmation" that a study published by the journal in October on NSAIDs and reduction of oral cancer contains fabricated data, the publication announces Feb. 4. Lancet study a sham?
Editors of The Lancet issued an "expression of concern" Jan. 17 about a study published in the journal in October which appeared to be based on "complete fabrication" by the study's lead author. John Sudbo, MD, PhD, Norwegian Radium Hospital, et al., found in a study that long-term use of NSAIDs was linked to reduced incidence of oral cancer but increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease. The hospital alerted Lancet editors to the problem Jan. 13, and the publication states that "the journal has not yet received written confirmation...that fabrication actually took place." The hospital has appointed an investigation committee to look into the matter.
