Vaccines and new antibody drugs are set to transform the respiratory syncytial virus space but for now, the Swedish rare disease specialist’s 25-year old offering Synagis is enjoying increased demand.

Even before a new law granted FDA authority to require studies be underway before accelerated approval, review divisions have, in some cases, given sponsors years of advance notice on expectations around study timing, according to a Pink Sheet review of NME accelerated approvals.

Last year, the European Commission approved a record 55 therapies containing a new active substance, including 21 medicines for rare diseases. Among them were a number of gene therapies for indications such as cancer and hemophilia.

As the usual flurry of deals coincides with the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, AbbVie signed an mRNA pact with Anima and a cancer research tie-up with Immunome.
