The number of big medtech venture rounds, those worth at least $50 million, has decreased and plateaued over the past couple of years, but the overall dollars brought in by those scarce deals notably increased in 2015. And a few lucky medtech firms managed to grab more than $100 million from single fundraises last year.
A survey of the fundraising activities of 183 private cardiovascular medtech, biopharma, and diagnostics companies from 2010 through April 2015 revealed that by 2014, following two years of waning venture investments, the group had raised less than half the capital secured in 2010. And although the average raised per round was roughly the same, the volume of deals was significantly higher in 2010.
Boston Scientific’s S-ICD subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator performed well in the EFFORTLESS registry, with clinical event rates and inappropriate shock rates similar to those reported for conventional ICDs in a real-world context.
Boston Scientific’s recent acquisition of Bard Electrophysiology marks the tenth notable acquisition that it has made since 2010. Four of those deals come in cardiac rhythm management, including EP, which is among the fastest-growing device sectors and one that company executives see as a major contributor to future growth.
