McNeil Nutritionals adds a nutritional boost to its zero-calorie sweetener with the launch of the Splenda Essentials line – stock-keeping units with 20% of the daily value of B vitamins, antioxidant vitamins C and E, or 1 g of fiber per packet. The Johnson & Johnson company says May 16 the Splenda extensions target consumers who "may not focus on getting all their recommended vitamins in a day, but they never forget to sweeten their coffee." All three SKUs are sold at a suggested price of $4.29 for an 80-packet box.

Cinnamon spices up Bonavitas beverage

The R12 natural recovery drink from Bonavitas is formulated with a teaspoon of cinnamon per serving, touting the spice's potential benefits in boosting blood circulation, muscle recovery and brain activity. The Provo, Utah, wellness company also says May 16 the cinnamon in its R12 gives the product a pleasant flavor without an aftertaste. A single 43-gram serving of R12 has an antioxidant load comparable to 98 tomatoes or 24 cups of green tea, Bonavitas says. A 30-packet box of R12 sells through Bonavitas' website for $75.

Xylitol enhances saline nasal sprays

Xlear Inc. expands its portfolio of xylitol health products with a line of Xlear Nasal Sprays, combining the natural sweetener with saline and grapefruit seed extract. Orem, Utah-based Xlear already formulates oral care products with xylitol and adds in a May 3 release that the sweetener demonstrated an ability to relieve nasal discomfort and help clean out bacteria that can cause cold, ear infection and flu. Kids Xlear Nasal Spray and an adult version both retail at a suggested $6.99 for a 0.75-ounce bottle.

Abbott Nutrition pairs salty and sweet

The latest ZonePerfect line extensions, Sweet & Salty nutrition bars in Cashew Pretzel and Trail Mix varieties, offer 10 g of protein and 19 vitamins and minerals, Abbott Nutrition says. The Abbott Park, Ill., company says May 9 that each 1.58-ounce bar contains 200 calories. A 5-count multi-pack of Sweet & Salty bars retails at $5.99.

Sheets Energy boasts celebrity endorsers

With the backing of professional basketball stars LeBron James and Amar'e Stoudamire and musician Drake, Sheets Energy Strips launch with a $10 million marketing campaign, according to consumer products holding company PureBrands. The New York firm says in a May 4 release that each sugar-free, dissolvable Sheets strip contains as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, along with vitamins B and E. A box of 10 individually wrapped strips, in Cinnamon Rush or Berry Blast flavors, sells for $5.95 through GNC.com.

MDSolarSciences unveils new sunscreen

The Norwalk, Conn.-based dermatology products firm says its Mineral Screen Tinted Gel 30+ is suitable for acne-prone skin and offers high levels of protection against UVA and UVB radiation. The 1.23-ounce product, with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, sells online for $24. MDSolarSciences collaborates with the Melanoma Research Foundation in formulating its sunscreens, which it co-packages with a "Sol ALERT" UV index detection device.

SmartyPants gets wise on kids' vitamins

SmartyPants Gummy Vitamins for children contain a full complement of vitamins and nutrients, including 300 mg of EPA and DHA omega-3s from fish oil. Formulated with 5 g of organic cane sugar per serving, the product is suitable for picky eaters, says SmartyPants of Venice, Calif. The vitamins are recommended for children aged 3 and older, SmartyPants says May 19, and they sell online at $21.95 for a 30-day supply of 120 gummies.

PR*Bar goes for the gold with Team USA

The Carlsbad, Calif.-based company will debut a line of Team USA performance nutrition bars in mid-2011, after reaching a licensing agreement with the U.S. Olympic Committee. PR*Bar is consulting with USOC dieticians to formulate the bars and will donate a portion of the proceeds to support Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The firm's partnership with USOC runs through June 2017.

WheyUp breaks out weight-loss beverage

WheyUP says its eponymous pre-workout beverage combines caffeine and protein to help users gain lean muscle or lose weight. A 16-ounce bottle offers 20 g of protein and just 90 calories, the Tempe, Ariz., firm says April 27. A case of 12 bottles sells online through WheyUP for $40.
