Who's Who On The PCORI Board Of Directors

The Government Accountability Office comptroller general appointed 19 individuals to join the directors of AHRQ and NIH on the board of the new Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. The public-private organization, formed under the health care reform law, will set a comparative effectiveness research agenda, sponsor research and disseminate findings. In general, members are appointed for six years and can serve for two consecutive terms. Membership is staggered, with about a third of the members' terms expiring every two years. Some initial appointments were for two- and four-year terms to keep participation staggered. (Source: GAO)

Commissioners whose first term expires in September 2016

PCORI Chairman – Eugene Washington, vice chancellor of UCLA Health Sciences and dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine. His research has focused on assessing medical technologies and national health policy, including prenatal genetic testing, cervical cancer screening and prevention, health care quality and racial/ethnic disparities in health outcomes.

PCORI Vice Chairman – Steven Lipstein, president and CEO of BJC Health Care. BJC is headquartered in St. Louis, Mo., with hospitals and community health centers in St. Louis, southern Illinois and mid-Missouri.

Christine Goertz, vice chancellor for research and health policy, Palmer College of Chiropractic and Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research. Her research focuses on patient outcomes and provider collaboration in high-quality care.

Sharon Levine, associate executive director for The Permanente Medical Group of Northern California. She is a board-certified pediatrician and previously served as chief of pediatrics within the group.

Ellen Sigal, chairperson and founder of Friends of Cancer Research, a think-tank and patient advocacy organization. She is board vice-chair of the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA and chair of the Public-Private Partnerships Committee at the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.

Harlan Weisman, chief science and technology officer, medical devices and diagnostics for Johnson & Johnson. He previously served as president of J&J Pharmaceutical Research & Development and was a consultant cardiologist and director of the Experimental Cardiac Pathology Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Robert Zwolak, vascular surgeon at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and professor of surgery at the Dartmouth Medical School. He has a special interest in health care policy issues surrounding vascular surgery and is working with the Society For Vascular Surgery to create a data registry and form a comparative effectiveness committee.

Lawrence Becker, director of strategic partnerships and alliances, Xerox Corp, bringing in an employer perspective.

Arnold Epstein, chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at Harvard University School of Public Health and an internist at Brigham and Women's Hospital. His research focuses on quality and access to care for disadvantaged groups.

Andrew Imparato, president and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities.

Robert Jesse, VA principal deputy undersecretary for health and national program director for cardiology. He is also a professor of internal medicine and cardiology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

Freda Lewis-Hall, Pfizer chief medical officer and senior VP of the Pfizer Medical Division. She founded the Lilly Center for Women's Health and served as a special advisor to the National Institute of Mental Health, focusing on outreach and patient education for minority Americans.

Grayson Norquist, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, University of Mississippi Medical Center. His research focuses on using telemedicine to reduce disparities in mental health treatment and to improve care at local community health centers.

Debra Barksdale, associate professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing. Her research focuses on psychological and physical stress, coping and cardiovascular response in African-Americans.

Kerry Barnett, executive VP of corporate services and chief legal officer, The Regence Group, an affiliate of Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans, based in Portland, Ore.

Allen Douma, CEO of Empower LLC and a member of the AARP board. He is a former assistant director of the Oregon Department of Human Services and medical director for Hartford and Travelers Insurance Cos.

Leah Hole-Curry, program director for the health technology assessment program at Washington State Health Care Authority. The HTA program relies on public and private partnerships to ensure that the state funds pay for effective treatments.

Harlan Krumholz, professor of medicine, epidemiology and public health at Yale University School of Medicine and a practicing cardiologist.

Richard Kuntz, senior VP and chief scientific, clinical and regulatory officer of Medtronic. He has previously served as an interventional cardiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
