AAD recommends higher vitamin D supplementation

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

The American Academy of Dermatology updates its statement on the importance of vitamin D for health adding, "individuals who regularly and properly practice sun protection, such as the daily use of sunscreen ... may be at risk for vitamin D insufficiency." The group recommends the public supplement the vitamin instead of obtaining it through unshielded ultraviolet rays, but adds some may need a higher dose of vitamin D, including the obese, elderly and people with limited sun exposure. AAD also notes the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine is reevaluating the recommended intake levels because of the benefits of vitamin D. The Department of Agriculture has discussed a level of 1,000 IU for at-risk individuals. The current recommended dose is from 200 to 600 IU, depending on age (1"The Tan Sheet" Sept. 1, 2008)
