Executive Summary
Consumers under 18 years old in Westchester County, N.Y., will be barred from purchasing OTC drugs containing dextromethorphan under a bill the county's board of legislators passed Aug. 11. Spurred by a fatality and a critical emergency room case related to DXM abuse in the past year, Westchester sought what one legislator called "an important preventative measure" against abuse of the substance for its hallucinogenic effects in large doses, a county release says. County Legislator Bill Burton cites surveys showing nearly 10 percent of teenagers admit to "robo-tripping" on DXM, and the legislation's aim is "to protect teens from the impulse to abuse DXM by removing the easy opportunity to act on that impulse."
