NSF International appointed Edward Wyszumiala Jan. 14 to head the organization's supplement programs as it expands its testing of sports nutrition products for banned substances in response to growing concern about adulterated products. "The new appointment comes at a crucial time as recent media articles on steroids reinforce the need for increased testing and certification of supplements and nutritional products," Ann Arbor, Mich.-based NSF says in a release. While expanding its sports product program was not directly prompted by the December release of a report on steroid use in Major League Baseball, "this is an issue that we take very seriously," NSF told "The Tan Sheet" in an e-mail. Wyszumiala was named general manager of NSF's dietary supplements and functional foods programs as well as its "Athletic Banned Substances Certification" service, which "offers a solution for athletes, coaches, trainers and anyone concerned about banned substances," according to the organization. The program so far has been recommended by Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, NSF said. Wyszumiala also "will develop new services that provide solutions to key industry issues as well as represent NSF on regulatory and industry committees," the independent, nonprofit organization said. Wyszumiala previously was an account manager for NSF's dietary supplements programs, leading the development and implementation of integrated sales strategies and certification initiatives, according to the release ('The Tan Sheet' Feb. 19, 2007, In Brief). Prior to joining NSF, he was chief operating officer for botanical products manufacturer Graminex, and was in charge of the firm's international pharmaceutical and nutraceutical operations and directed its expansion into new markets. Wyszumiala takes over managing the dietary supplements programs from David Abney, who is no longer with NSF, the organization said. - Jessica Lake ([email protected]) |
