Executive Summary

The U.K. Food Standards Agency's Board unanimously agrees mandatory folic acid fortification of foods will be recommended to U.K. health ministries, FSA announces May 17. The FSA board will decide at its next meeting in June whether bread or flour should be fortified and determine potential appropriate labeling, and will make its final recommendation to U.K. health ministers following the meeting. Folate fortification has been mandatory in the U.S. since 1998, when FDA required folic acid fortification ranging from 0.43 mg to 1.4 mg per pound of product (1"The Tan Sheet" March 4, 1996, p. 18). As a result, neural tube defects pregnancy rates have dropped 27% to 3.82 cases of NTD per every 10,000 live births (2"The Tan Sheet" Dec. 12, 2005, p. 8)...

The rules supercede the January 1994 reg.
