Executive Summary

The dietary supplement industry again urges athletes who claim that contaminated supplements caused them to fail steroid tests name the products they used, according to a joint release by the American Herbal Products Association, National Nutritional Foods Association and Utah Natural Products Alliance. The statement was made in light of Major League Baseball's recent announcement of tougher policies on steroid usage. The groups also are "asking FDA to act promptly to investigate any identified product and move forward as appropriate." The call for players to step forward about their product use was first issued by the groups in September (1"The Tan Sheet" Sept. 26, 2005, p. 10). Contaminated products "are illegal drugs that are masquerading as legitimate supplements in the face of inadequate enforcement," the current release states. "Broad allegations against the entire class of products are inaccurate and cannot be tolerated"...
