Executive Summary
A bill that prohibits high school athletes from taking dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), ephedrine and synephrine (bitter orange) was signed into law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) Oct. 7. The bill, introduced by Sen. Jackie Speier (D) in December, was criticized by the Council for Responsible Nutrition for "inappropriately targeting only dietary supplements" and making no mention of other potentially harmful substances such as steroids (1"The Tan Sheet" Aug. 29, 2005, p. 12). According to CRN President Steve Mister, the bill will potentially send a message to high school students that all dietary supplements should be avoided.
