Executive Summary

Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) advise UK health officials that establishing low ULs for vitamins, minerals "restricts trade without providing a necessary level of health protection" in several Oct. 22 letters. Addressed to members of the Food Standards Agency, Department of Health and Expert Group on Vitamins & Minerals, letters note EVM's draft proposal on ULs "sets the stage for the European community to ultimately establish maximum permitted nutrient levels for food supplements that are unduly restrictive." EVM issued proposal in August and is accepting comments until Nov. 21 (1"The Tan Sheet" Sept. 9, 2002, p. 11). European Commission must set ULs by July 2003; CRN has said it will encourage EC to use science-based approach in setting upper limits (2"The Tan Sheet" Oct. 21, 2002, p. 9)...
