Executive Summary

St. Louis Cardinals home run star announces he stopped using the dietary supplement androstenedione four months ago. McGwire says he does not want to be portrayed as an endorser of the supplement. The supplement reached the height of publicity when McGwire announced he used andro to help recuperate from his training regimen. Subsequently, companies flooded the market with andro products. However, questions began to arise regarding the lack of clinical data supporting andro's steroidal effects and safety. In January, the ingredient was nominated for toxicity testing by the National Toxicology Program (1"The Tan Sheet" Jan. 4, p. 8)
