The Committee on Over the Counter Drugs at the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Feb. 25 approved two vitamin D3 drugs, alfacalcidol and calcitiol for switch OTC. The two ingredients are currently used to treat osteoporosis. However, the committee decided to withhold approvals for three proton pump inhibitors: omeprazole, rabeprazole and lansoprazole. The decision was based on safety concerns expressed by the Japanese Society for Gastroenterology.
