A total of 5,364 patent applications for pharmaceuticals were filed with the European Patent Office in 20121.
According to data in the EPO's 2012 annual report, over a ten-year period between 2003 and 2012, the number of pharma patents filed each year remained relatively stagnant; 4,907 pharma patent applications were filed in 2003.
