The inaugural meeting of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control's management board was due to be held in Stockholm, Sweden, on 27 September 2004, following the centre's official start-up ceremony1. The centre, whose setting up was approved by the European Parliament on 10 February 20042, will enable European Union countries to pool their scientific knowledge and respond more effectively to emerging health threats such as SARS and avian influenza. The European Commission is currently seeking a director for the ECDPC - a vacancy notice appeared in the Official Journal on 7 August 20043.
