Treaty introduced in both parliaments
A trans-Tasman Treaty, paving the way for the setting up of a Trans-Tasman Agency, was simultaneously introduced into both the Australian and New Zealand Parliaments on 30 March 20041. The new agency will replace both the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration and the New Zealand Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority (Medsafe), and will be answerable to the governments of both countries. The treaty establishes the governance and accountability arrangements for the new agency and how it will be set up, and provides a framework for the joint regulatory scheme.
