Lakewood juice maker draws warning

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

In a July 8 warning letter, FDA details a litany of alleged violative health claims Florida Bottling Inc. made for its Lakewood Organic Juice products. The company's label and website claims referencing disease states make the juices unapproved new drugs, such reducing pain from arthritis and aiding in ulcer healing, according to FDA's Florida district office. Miami-based Florida Bottling also uses unauthorized health claims such as "heart healthy" for certain products and unauthorized nutrient content claims for fiber and antioxidants. The violations detailed in the warning letter, posted Aug. 3, echo those in warnings FDA issued in February to food firms, some of which also marketed what the agency considered unapproved drugs (1"The Tan Sheet" March 8, 2010)
