FDA orders botanicals seized from “filthy” facility

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

U.S. Marshals seize $1.5 million of product from the American Mercantile Corp., which stores and processes food ingredients for use by dietary supplement and herbal tea manufacturers, FDA announces May 7. The agency requested the seizure after Memphis, Tenn.-based AMC failed to correct unsanitary conditions, including rodent and insect infestations, identified at the facility during a March inspection. The products seized - including spearmint leaves, sweet orange peel powder and licorice powder - "may have become contaminated with filth," though no consumers reported adverse events associated with the products, the agency says. AMC's Web site states it operates a "GMP/FDA and pharmaceutical complaint [sic] manufacturing facility." The company did not respond to requests for comment
