Executive Summary

The Obama administration nominates Kevin Concannon as Department of Agriculture under secretary for food, nutrition and consumer cervices. If confirmed, Concannon will serve with Secretary Tom Vilsack and replace acting Under Secretary Beth Johnson (1"The Tan Sheet" Sept. 29, 2008, p. 14). Concannon served as director of the Iowa Department of Human Services from 2003 to 2008, according to an April 17 release. He also was director of health and human services agencies in Maine and Oregon

Zerhouni leaving NIH: National Institutes of Health Director Elias Zerhouni will leave his post at the end of October to pursue other opportunities, according to a Sept. 24 letter to NIH staff. He says he is "extremely fortunate to have led the agency that has been at the center of" a biomedical science revolution, "one that continues to have broad and profound implications for human health." Zerhouni says he will work with Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt to appoint his successor at NIH.
