BMS forms executive committee: The firm adds president to Chief Operating Officer Lamberto Andreotti's titles and appoints Chief Financial Officer Jean-Marc Huet's as an executive VP. Both Andreotti and Huet will serve on the newly formed executive committee along with Chairman and CEO James Cornelius and Elliot Sigal, executive VP, chief scientific officer and president of research and development, BMS announces March 3. Andreotti, who was considered for CEO when Cornelius was appointed in 2007, could be a frontrunner for the post when Cornelius steps down, expected to be in May. BMS recently spun off about a 20 percent stake in its wholly owned subsidiary Mead Johnson Nutritional with a $720 million initial public offering of shares (2 (Also see "Mead Johnson Set Loose To Navigate Market, Shifting Economic Winds " - Pink Sheet, 16 Feb, 2009.), p. 3).

Obama selects FTC chairman: Jon Leibowitz rises in the Federal Trade Commission ranks to chairman. President Obama designated Leibowitz, who served as an FTC commissioner since September 2004, as chairman in a March 2 order. Leibowitz was Democratic chief counsel and staff director for the Senate Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee from 1987 to 2000 and chief counsel to Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., from 1989 to 2000.

Sanofi-Aventis U.S. chairman retires: The Paris-based pharmaceutical firm's U.S. chairman, Tim Rothwell, will retire after a career of more than 35 years - including five with Sanofi. Rothwell will step down March 31, the firm says Feb. 24. He joined Sanofi in 2003 as president and CEO of Sanofi-Sythelabo U.S. and in 2007 became Sanofi U.S. chairman, focusing on policy and communication.

Dreer heads NCCAM office: Dale Birkle Dreer takes the helm of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine's Office of Scientific Review. Dreer oversees OSR scientists and technical support personnel and the peer review process for grants and contracts. She also will evaluate NCCAM's grant review processes, the National Institutes of Health says Feb. 17. Dreer joined NCCAM in 2001 as a scientific review officer and previously was a pharmacology and toxicology professor at West Virginia University.

Herbalife names managing directors: The Los Angeles-based supplement and personal care products marketer names William Rahn and Patricio Cuesta as international managing directors. Rahn will manage the company's Asia Pacific Region, which includes 12 countries. He joined Herbalife in 2004 as senior VP of Japan and took the responsibility for all sales and operations in Japan and Korea in 2006 and then all Asia Pacific in 2007. Cuesta takes the post of managing director of South America after five months in an acting capacity. Cuesta joined Herbalife in 2005 as country director for Argentina and was promoted to VP of Southern South America in December 2007. ... Expands advisory board: Kidney expert Jorge Domiguez joins Herbalife's Nutrition Advisory Board. Dominquez, who will educate and train the multilevel marketer's distributors and sales employees about nutrition, physical activity and healthy lifestyle, was previously chief of the nephrology and hemodialysis unit at Miguel Perez Carreno Hospital in Caracas, Venezuela. He also served chief of the hospital's internal medicine department before being named to the institution's board, Herbalife says Feb. 23.

Zeno Corp.'s promotes: The Houston-based maker of OTC blemish devices promotes Lee Stranathan to senior VP and president of international business after serving as senior VP of marketing. Zeno also hires Andrea DiNunzio as senior VP of global marketing, the company announces Feb. 27. DiNunzio says she will leverage Zeno's patented technology to establish the firm as a beauty industry leader. To provide ongoing counsel to the company, Zeno also appoints former Chrysallis executives Melissa Shaban and Jill Scalamandre to its Brand Advisory Board.

Solae raises quality standard: Soy ingredient producer Solae creates two new quality and safety positions as food safety concerns mount across the industry. The St. Louis-based firm Feb. 18 announces Jason Mann as global group leader for food safety. Mann will improve food safety programs, environmental sanitation and compliance with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points imposed by federal regulators. Solae also appoints Hector DeVitre associate director of global quality control. DeVitre will standardize and centralize global quality control process.
